Ames man charged with attempted murder

A suspect has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and first degree robbery for an attack on an Ames man, back in October of 2014.

Jason Tuttle, investigations commander and public information officer for the Ames Police Department, reported that Roman Moncivaiz, 21, was arrested Monday night in Nevada, Ia. after a warrant was issued earlier this month for his arrest.

Moncivaiz is suspected of stabbing a man he knew after attacking him and stealing his cell phone, Tuttle said.

“He stabbed the victim multiple times in the neck, head and torso,” Tuttle said. “The stab to the head was in his left temple and was with such force that it penetrated his skull and caused a brain laceration.”

The victim was left bleeding at the location for about 24 hours before someone found him, Tuttle said. Amazingly enough, the victim did survive, but some of his injuries are expected to be lifetime injuries.

Ames Police are not currently releasing the victim’s name, who is prepared to testify, for his protection. Tuttle said authorities have another suspect, who was with Moncivaiz at the time. Authorities have not charged the second suspect at this point.

Moncivaiz could be facing up to 50 years in prison since attempted murder and first degree robbery are both B-class felonies that carry a max sentence of 25 years, Tuttle said.

Bail for Moncivaiz, who is being held at the Story County Jail, has been set at $200,000 according to the county jail website.

Tuttle said that the delay in the case was mostly due to collection of evidence, such as DNA, and the wait for the victim, who was in the hospital for several weeks, to remember the attack due to his injuries.
