University Museums celebrate 40 years of existence

This year marks the 40th anniversary for Iowa State’s University Museums.
Iowa State is home to the Brunnier Art Museum, the Christian Petersen Art Museum and the Farm House Museum, as well as the Anderson Sculpture Garden and many art pieces on campus.
Included in these museums and around campus are the Christian Petersen Art Collection, the Art on Campus Collection and the University Art Collection.
Allison Sheridan, program coordinator of University Museums, said Iowa State will host events throughout the fall semester in celebration of the University Museums’ anniversary.
All University Museums events are free to the public unless otherwise noted.
12 p.m., Aug. 26, Lied Recreation Athletic Center:
Art Walk- A Celebration of the Life and Sculpture of William King
This walk will honor the life and sculpture of Bill King, who passed away in March.
David Faux, University Museums interpretation specialist, will accompany students as they walk through campus, starting at King’s Stride sculpture and ending at the Anderson Sculpture Garden.
6-7:30 p.m., Sept. 2, Christian Petersen Art Museum:
(Re)discovering S(h)elves Exhibition Reception
This exhibit aims to encourage viewers to look at themselves and different identity perceptions. Refreshments will be provided.
Dawn Bratsch-Prince, associate provost; Michele Schaal, assistant professor of English and women’s studies and Nancy Gebhart, University Museums program coordinator, will speak about the exhibit at 6:30 p.m.
5:30 p.m., Sept. 9, Christian Petersen Art Museum:
Artful Yoga
This yoga session aims to bring an artistic perspective to the individual’s awareness. For this session, participants will focus on introspection and identity.
There will be a discussion on the topic at 5:15 p.m. prior to the yoga session. Yoga experience is unnecessary, but students are required to bring their own yoga mat.

7-9 p.m., Sept. 19, Brunnier Art Museum:
40/40: University Museums 40th Anniversary Celebration
This event will cost $40, $50 at the door. All of the proceeds go toward the museums on campus. Festive attire is encouraged.
Students are encouraged to join this celebration of the foundation of University Museums. There will be refreshments, live music and the premier of the Iowa State Museum’s newly published book, “Campus Beautiful: Shaping the Aesthetic Identity of Iowa State University”.
During 40/40, there will be 40 works of art from 40 Iowa artists acquired, which are already part of the collections at Iowa State, and there will be 40 new works of art from 40 Iowa artists who have not been a part of the collections at Iowa State.
40/40 is a time to reflect on how far Iowa State has come in its support of the arts and the artists of Iowa.
2 p.m., Sept. 20, Brunnier Art Museum
Ceramics and Tea – Lecture by Artist Peter Hamann.
Peter Hamann studied in Iowa when he was a young artist and has lived in Japan for more than 30 years while he has crafted beautiful ceramics. He has also learned the art of the tea ceremony, which is highly respected in Japanese culture.
Hamann will provide a lecture and share his artwork, some of which will be on display in the 40/40 exhibit.
12 p.m., Sept. 23, Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center:
Art Walk- A Celebration of New Facilities and New Opportunities
This walk will focus on Iowa State’s new Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center.
David Faux, University Museums interpretation specialist, will lead the exploration of the center’s pavilion and other spaces, focusing on the mural by Clint Hansen: “A Sustained Legacy: Advancing Science, students, Farms, the World.”
Participants will meet Faux at the main door of the center.
7:30 p.m., Oct. 9, Music Hall:
ISU Symphony Orchestra Concert
The concert will premiere a new composition by Jeff Prater, professor emeritus of composition and theory at Iowa State. Boro Martinic, assistant professor of Violin, will also be featured playing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.
2 p.m., Oct. 11, Farm House Museum:
Celebrating “Campus Beautiful”
This newly published book gives a look at how Iowa State’s campus has developed aesthetically in the past 150 years.
Paula Mohr, architectural historian and essayist in the book, will give a tour of Central Campus, pointing out design principles that have given Iowa State high praise by critics. Iowa State has been named as one of the most beautiful campuses in the country.
During this event, the book will be available for purchase for $100 at the Farm House Museum.
12 p.m., Oct. 14, Memorial Union:
Art Walk – A Celebration of the Living Memorial
Letitia Kenemer, fine arts coordinator and workspace director will lead this walk and explore the artful soul of the Memorial Union. Participants can meet Kenemer in the Gold Star Hall.
5:30 p.m., Oct. 14, Christian Petersen Art Museum:
Artful Yoga
This yoga experience will focus on the value of diversity in practice. Discussion on the topic will begin at 5:15 p.m. Students must bring their own mat. Yoga experience is unnecessary.

7 p.m., Oct. 22, Christian Petersen Art Museum:
Women in the Arts – A Roundtable Discussion
This discussion will focus on the work of the “Guerilla Girls,” a feminist activist group created in 1985 to expose three major issues encountered by female artists.
The three issues are the absence in major international museums of female artists, the marginalization of females from history books and the lack of funds granted to females’ projects.
During the event, participants will discuss the current state of women and female multicultural artists as well as the role of women in the arts.
Michele Schaal, assistant professor of English and women’s studies, will moderate the meeting.
7 p.m., Oct. 29, Morrill Hall:
Ghost Stories of Iowa State
University Museums will tell historic and haunted stories of Iowa State.
2 p.m., Nov. 1, Brunnier Art Museum
Storied Life of Art – Lecture by Artist Jane Gilmor
Jane Gilmor uses her intermedia art installations and performances to tell her stories.
During this event, she will discuss her art career, the impact of the women’s movement on her work, community art projects and more.
12 p.m., Nov. 4, Snedecor Hall:
Art Walk – A Celebration of the Artists Rebecca Ekstrand and Tom Rosborough
This walk will begin at the north entrance of Snedecor Hall and will be led by Ekstrnad and Rosborough and will celebrate their solo and collaborated works.
5:30 p.m., Nov. 11, Christian Petersen Art Museum:
Artful Yoga
For this session, participants will focus on small and large movements. A discussion on the topic will begin at 5:15.

7 p.m., Nov. 18, Christian Petersen Art Museum:
Negative Space
April Eisman, associate professor of art and visual culture, will lead a gallery walk of the (Re)discovering S(h)elves exhibit.
Eisman will discuss negative space within objects and images and a deeper meaning to the term “negative space.”
5-7 p.m., Dec. 4, Brunnier Art Museum:
40/40 Exhibition Closing Recepton
This will be the final celebration of University Museums 40th anniversary. Light refreshments will be available.
12 p.m., Dec. 9, Farm House Museum:
Art Walk – A Celebration of Beginnings; A Celebration of the Future
This walk will explore Iowa State’s origins at the Farm House Museum and will be led by Faux, who will tell stories of the house. Participants will be able to share their own stories as well.
5:30 p.m., December 9, Christian Petersen Art Museum:
Artful Yoga
This yoga session will focus on the female body, mind and spirit. A discussion on the topic will begin at 5:15 p.m.

Photographing Identity – Lecture by Artist Stephanie Brunia
Stephanie Brunia will speak about her photography and the influences on her art in conjunction with the (Re)discovering S(h)elves exhibit.
