July 1 – Former ISU researcher sentenced to 57 months in prison for research fraud
Former ISU scientist Dong-Pyou Han was sentenced to 57 months in prison on July 1 for falsifying research results of an AIDS vaccine.
Han will also have to repay $7.2 million to the National Institutes of Health, which granted up to $20 million in federal funding for the research.
July 2 – Ames police arrest suspect in connection to armed robbery
Desean Marquis Sims, 18, of Ames, was taken into custody July 2 in connection with an armed robbery at 3817 Marigold Dr.
Sims was charged with first-degree robbery —a class “B” felony — and assault while participating in a felony — a class “D” felony.
Police were unsure if Sims was involved in the robbery near North Grand Mall on June 30.
July 2 – Branstad vetoes one-time education funding
Gov. Terry Branstad vetoed one-time funding for Iowa’s regent universities, Iowa community colleges and K-12 schools in the state.
The veto cut almost $56 million from Iowa schools. The funds would have included $2,254,079 to Iowa State.
July 6 – Summer enrollment sets record at Iowa State
2015 summer enrollment in 2015 reached 11,636 students, breaking the previous record of 11,530 students set in 2014.
On-campus enrollment decreased by 106 students, but the number of students enrolled in online courses increased from 2,751 students to 2,957.
“Students are very comfortable and interested in learning in different ways, and we want to be able to offer classes to students in person, online or in a blended way, in whatever way best fits the material and the student’s learning style,” ISU Senior Vice President and Provost Jonathan Wickert said. “We are seeing what is part of a national trend, and that is increasing student interest in online instruction.”
July 13 – Bush takes shots at Clinton
Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush appeared at the Fifth Annual Judge Joseph Story Dinner at the Prairie Moon Winery on July 13.
Bush talked about his plans of sustaining economic growth and embracing the energy revolution.
He also responded to criticism by Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
“Bring it on,” Bush said.
July 17 – Two men arrested after car chase
Ames Police arrested two men, one after a foot chase and the other after a car chase July 17.
Police said Chad M. Bryant, 27, (no address) and Donald Ferguson, 51, of Marshalltown, were taken into custody after fleeing the Honda of Ames dealership at 220 Kitty Hawk Dr. when police responded to a report of a fraudulent check being used to purchase a 2010 Acura.
Bryant was charged with three felonies and three misdemeanors, and Ferguson was charged with two felonies and two misdemeanors.
July 17 – Democrats gather at ‘Hall of Fame’ dinner
Democratic presidential candidates Lincoln Chafee, Hillary Clinton, Martin O’Malley, Bernie Sanders and Jim Webb gathered for the first time at the annual “Hall of Fame” dinner in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the first time July 17.
In addition to speeches from each of the candidates, the Iowa Democratic Party inducted its newest inductees into the party’s Hall of Fame.
July 18 – Donald Trump stirs controversy at Family Leadership Summit
Ten presidential candidates gathered for the Family Leadership Summit at Stephens Auditorium on July 18.
Ten candidates who answered questions from moderator Frank Luntz:
Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.; businessman Donald Trump; retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson; Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas; former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee; former Texas Gov. Rick Perry; Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Gov. Bobby Jindal, R-La., former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and Gov. Scott Walker, R-Wis.
Trump stirred up controversy at the event with this quote about Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.:
“I supported him for president. I raised a million dollars for him, that’s a lot of money. I supported him; he lost. He let us down; he lost. So I never liked him as much after that cause I don’t like losers. He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”
