A businesswoman’s essentials

As a business professional, everything needs to be trim, classy and simple. From your watch to your pens to your business cards and back, keep it professional.

With a little help from an article from Business Insider, I’ve compiled a list of some helpful things to acquire when you’re a businesswoman in a professional environment.

Suits

As far as business attire goes, suits and a few, key separates are some of the best options. Remember to go with more subtle colors like black, navy blue, cream and a deeper red. A good brand to buy is Theory.

Business-card holder

Purchase a simple, professional business-card tin for easy access to your your fancy cards. When you’re meeting with another professional, you look that much better with a special tin that holds your contact information.

With this, make sure you have beautiful, heavy-stock business cards. Nothing says “I’m the real deal” like spending some coin on some worthwhile business cards.

iPad

iPads can be great for anyone of any age for any reason, but a businesswoman can find an iPad invaluable. Work computers are often restricted to business use exclusively, so having a place to peruse the Intranet at your leisure is great. Personal-use tech is good to have on you.

Laptop tote bag

For all your electronics, make sure you have the right way to transport them. A fashionable laptop tote with built-in thermal storage is a good idea to keep your laptop safe and at the right temperature.

Cardigans

A cardigan — or some other sort of muted cover-up — can be a real lifesaver if your office is a bit too cold. Try to keep a simple black cardigan around you at all times as it’s functional and can usually be paired with most outfits.

Some freshen-up supplies

Make sure you have some back-up refreshers like concealer, a small brush, a little thing of perfume, a pocket mirror, some baby powder and whatever else you could find need during your day in your handbag.

Some professional jobs require you to travel from building to building, so these items could save you during a hot, sweaty day.

Day planner

Cell phones are great, but it can be hard to stay completely organized and sane with a mobile application that manages your appointments and to-do lists. Having a nice, leather-bound day planner makes you appear more thoughtful and pleasantly in-touch with tradition.

Shoes

Keep your heels stylish, conservative and less than three inches in height. Too flashy a shoe or too high a heel can raise some questions of your professionalism, no matter how boring that concept seems. Also keep in mind that overdressing relative to your boss is a big no-no.

You aren’t limited to heels, but flats can sometimes appear unprofessional. Try to pick flats with some attractive hardware on it, like some metal or leather pieces.

All those others

Like with shoes, it’s obvious to keep all your other business-like appearances subtle and classy. Jewelry, nail polish, makeup and even your handbag need to be professional and toned-down. Also keep in mind that brand labels should be hidden if at all possible. Nobody wants an overly flashy coworker.

Stockings

By popular opinion and generally-accepted etiquette: Never wear a skirt or dress without stockings. Just don’t do it.
