Ames Police arrested two men, one after a foot chase and the other after a car chase, on Thursday.
Police said Chad M. Bryant, 27, (no address) and Donald Ferguson, 51, of Marshalltown, were taken into custody after fleeing the Honda of Ames dealership at 220 Kitty Hawk Dr. after police responded to a report of a fraudulent check being used to purchase a 2010 Acura.
Bryant has been charged with three felonies and three misdemeanors, and Ferguson has been charged with two felonies and two misdemeanors.
Witnesses identified Bryant as the purchaser of the vehicle.
Ames Police Cmdr. Jason Tuttle said one suspect fled on foot toward the DNR Nursery on South Duff Avenue. While officers were pursuing the first suspect, an officer attempted to stop a vehicle fitting the other suspect’s description on Highway 30 near South Duff Avenue, Tuttle said. The driver refused to stop and fled westbound, leading officers on a high-speed chase.
“We actually terminated the pursuit shortly into Boone County because of the speeds and us not knowing the roads,” Tuttle said. “The troopers picked it up at that point and continued to pursue him.”
According to an Ames Police Department press release, the driver was taken into custody without a physical altercation near Polk City. The release identified Ferguson as the driver.
Tuttle said shortly after the car pursuit ended, Ames Police found and arrested the man on foot, later identified as Bryant.
According to the press release, Ames Police were assisted by Marshalltown Police, the Iowa State Patrol, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Tuttle said Ames Police are cooperating with Marshalltown Police in connection with an undisclosed incident in Marshalltown last week the suspects may have been involved in.
Bryant has been charged with: forgery [aggravated misdemeanor]; forgery [class D felony]; identity theft [class D felony]; first-degree theft [class C felony]; harassment of a public official [simple misdemeanor]; and interference with official acts [simple misdemeanor].
Ferguson has been charged with: first-degree theft [class C felony]; eluding while participating in a felony [class D felony]; possession of a controlled substance — marijuana [serious misdemeanor]; and driving while license suspended [simple misdemeanor].
Bryant is being held at Story County Jail on a $26,250 bond. Ferguson is being held on a $20,000 bond, also at Story County Jail.
