Zach Steffen only played in one event his senior year at Iowa State, but that has not stopped the aspiring professional from reaching golf’s highest level.

Steffen, who competed in just eight events in two seasons at Iowa State from 2012-14, claimed one of four spots available at Monday’s John Deere Classic qualifier by tying for first place with a six-under-par 66 at Pinnacle Country Club in Milan, Ill.

The 23-year-old Des Moines and Lincoln High School product claimed one of four spots available and will compete in a field headed by world No. 2 player Jordan Spieth.

Spieth won the JDC in 2013 and is the current Masters and U.S. Open Champion.

Since turning professional after graduating from Iowa State in May 2014, Steffen has competed on the Dakotas Tour, the Dreamchasers Tour, the All-America Gateway Tour and the Pepsi Tour.

In the spring, Steffen will attempt to qualify to compete on the Mackenzie Tour, also known as PGA Tour Canada.

On Sept. 23, Steffen won the Dakotas Tour Championship to claim his first professional victory.

The John Deere Classic will be held on July 9 to 12 from TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
