One dead, one critically injured in Campustown construction accident

A construction worker sits alone Friday evening after a construction accident took the life of his colleague, and critically injured another.

Ames Police have confirmed that one man is dead and another is in critical condition after a construction accident involving a fall from scaffolding at 2300 Lincoln Way. 

The accident occurred at “The Foundry” a luxury apartment complex scheduled to open for students next fall.

Multiple rescue crews, including a ladder truck, were on the scene to assist any injured parties.

UPDATE:

According to a press release by the Ames Fire Department, at approximately 5 p.m. on Friday, Ames Firefighters, Mary Greeley Paramedics and Ames Police responded to 2300 Lincoln Way for a report of a fall from scaffolding. The incident occurred at the construction site of a new six-story apartment complex. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they used ladders to gain access to a second story roof where they found two individuals that had fallen approximately three-stories off the scaffolding. One individual was pronounced dead at the scene, the other was lowered to the ground and transported by ambulance to Mary Greeley Medical Center.

The condition of the individual who was transported to the hospital is not being released. Names of the victim and patient are not being released pending notification of family. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time and is under investigation.

UPDATE:

According to a press release by Ames Police, the man who initially survived the fall from scaffolding at the 2300 Lincoln Way construction site last Friday has succumbed to his injuries. Alfredo Jarez, unknown age, of Des Moines, was treated at Mary Greeley Medical Center before his death.

Javier Hernandez, 35, of Des Moines, has also been identified as the man pronounced dead on the scene.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. A witness reported the workers were wearing safety harnesses, but they weren’t tied off to the safety ropes on the scaffolding. The deceased individuals were working as siding contractors for Whitey Exteriors and E.S.L.
