Georges Niang discovers range at Capital City League
June 25, 2015
The fourth day of the Capital City League, once again, had plenty of scoring, including one player dropping 58 points.
Here’s the rundown of how the games went Wednesday evening and how each current ISU men’s basketball player performed.
Game 1: Hannah Homes 117, Renaissance Granite & Quartz 111
Playing in his second Capital City League game, sophomore guard Hallice Cooke improved on his debut performance. Cooke scored 29 points on 7-of-15 shooting from beyond the arc while pulling down eight rebounds and dishing out five assists.
In Cooke’s first game he scored 21 points, recorded seven assists and six rebounds
Deonte Burton, a junior wing who will be eligible to play Dec. 19, continued his strong play, scoring 35 points, grabbing nine rebounds and dunking a few times along the way.
Renaissance Granite & Quartz was without redshirt senior Abdel Nader, who has yet to appear in a Capital City League game.
Game 2: Phoenix Renewable Resources 122, Walnut Creek YMCA 110
Junior point guard Monté Morris didn’t record a triple double Wednesday evening for Phoenix Renewable Resources like he did on Sunday evening, but he did score 29 points on 10-of-23 shooting from the field. Morris also recorded 11 rebounds: six defensive and five offensive, four assists and zero turnovers.
On Sunday, Morris scored 32 points, dished out 12 assists and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Walnut Creek YMCA was without transfer wing Nick Babb and senior big man Jameel McKay. McKay has yet to appear in a Capital City game this summer.
Game 3: ADIO Chiropractic 147, Capital Orthopedics 97
Senior forward Georges Niang and ADIO Chiropractic were in control of the final game of the evening from start to finish.
Finishing with 58 points, Niang was tough to slow down, shooting 22-of-33 overall and 10-of-17 from 3-point range. He also pulled down nine rebounds, playing like the all-American he earned last season.
Junior college walk-on Jordan Ashton continued to impress, scoring 24 points for ADIO Chiropractic. Ashton shot 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Through four Capital City League games Ashton is shooting 19-of-28, nearly 68 percent, from beyond the arc.
Capital Orthopedics was without both junior guard Matt Thomas and freshman guard Nick Noskowiak on Wednesday night.
Quick hits
-Georges Niang stole the evening. While Capital City League defense is nothing to write home about, scoring 58 points and shooting 66 percent in a game is an impressive line.
-Deonte Burton continues to show off his athleticism, dunking at least three balls every night.
-Five current ISU players didn’t play Wednesday evening, including Nader and McKay, who have yet to appear in a Capital City League game.
