June 29, 2015
X Ambassadors will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Wooly’s in Des Moines. Doors open at 6:30 p.m, and all ages are welcome. Tickets are $12 and are available at the Wooly’s website. K.Flay and Handsome Ghost will open for the band.
X Ambassadors first full-length album, “VHS,” drops Tuesday. Things are really heating up for the band members as they are currently touring to promote their new album and just debuted their first television appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.”
The American alternative-rock band consists of Sam Harris as vocalist and saxophone player, Casey Harris on keyboard, Noah Feldshuh on guitar and drummer Adam Levin. The band hails from Ithaca, N.Y.
With the band blowing up and its fan base growing rapidly, the members have kept each other grounded and humble through their close bonds. Sam and Casey are brothers and have known Feldshuh since childhood and met Levin in college.
“We have been doing this for so long and we’ve been through so much, and with all this new exciting stuff that’s been going on, now we’re as busy as we’ve ever been,” Sam said. “We remember the times when we weren’t busy, freaking out because we felt like we put everything into this career, and it was just not going anywhere. That feeling will never leave us. That’s what keeps us grounded. That fear and each other.”
Sam writes all of the lyrics, but the band works collaboratively on the music. His lyrics are personal and from the heart.
“I just try to write good songs … [I] write what I know and what I’ve experienced or what I’ve seen other people experience,” Sam said.
He said he loves all of the songs on the new album, but if he had to pick just one, it would be “Gorgeous.”
“It sounds like something I’ve never written before, and I had a lot of fun writing it,” Sam said.
X Ambassadors isn’t just any rock band. It’s thrown in some soul and hip-hop. Sam said the members grew up listening to hip-hop, R&B and soul. He said Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Jay-Z, Eminem, Notorious B.I.G. and Kanye West are some of his influences.
Sam said the band sees each concert as a job.
“We’ve always had an ethos in our band that no matter where you’re playing, no matter how many people are there, you’ve got to … do your job. That’s what you’re there to do,” he said. “You’re there to put on a show, and you’re there to give everything and leave a pint of blood on the stage.”
Sam said that between all of the places they have visited, he could never pick only one.
“Every place is great once we get inside the venue and are playing to our fans,” Sam said. “That is always great no matter where we are.”
