Five things freshmen need to know before beginning school in the fall related to ISU student health, according to the Thielen Student Health Center.

1. What immunizations do I need before moving to Iowa State in August?

All students must provide proof of immunity to measles. Meningitis vaccination is recommended by the centers for disease control. Students must meet the immunization requirement using AccessPlus. See the student health center website at www.cyclonehealth.org/submit for details.

2. Does the student health center take insurance?

Yes, students should provide insurance information before their first visit at Student Health. An insurance form can be completed and copies of the current insurance card can be made before a student’s first visit.

Students should contact their insurance company to determine what coverage they have at Student Health or other medical providers in the Ames area. Visit our website at www.cyclonehealth.org/insurance for more information. Information about ISU’s Student and Scholars Health Program (SSHIP) can be found at www.hrs.iastate.edu/hrs/sship.

3. Is the AlcoholEdu required?

All first-year students are required to complete the online prevention program AlcoholEdu using AccessPlus. More information on this program can be found at www.cyclonehealth.org/prevention/alcoholedu/.

4. What should I bring to college with me? What is available to me on campus?

New students can find a checklist of First Aid and medical items to bring to campus at www.cyclonehealth.org/new. Student Health has a pharmacy on site that can restock these items, fill prescriptions, assist in over-the-counter product selection and provide information on medications. Students can find more information about our pharmacy at www.cyclonehealth.org/pharmacy.

5. Who do I contact if I’m not feeling well?

If you have a question or concern about your health, contact Student Health to schedule an appointment or to seek confidential medical advice. Visit www.cyclonehealth.org for information on all of your Student Health services.
