The voices behind Pixar animated characters
June 8, 2015
Pixar, Pixar, Pixar. What great masterpieces Pixar has created. “Finding Nemo,” “Cars,” “Toy Story,” “Monsters Inc.” and so many others. What’s more interesting than the myriad of story lines Pixar has created is how the comapny goes about casting the voices for the characters.
Most studios seem to find the actors before creating the characters. Pixar creates the character then finds the stars that best fit the characters. The studio finds the right voice to perfectly fit the character.
Though the celebrities that voice Pixar characters are often widely known, the characters are usually so strong that viewers don’t notice the celebrity as him or herself. You forget who the voice is, and you are encompassed by the personality of the animated character.
Some of the biggest ones that come to mind: Tim Allen and Tom Hanks voiced Buzz Lightyear and Woody in “Toy Story,” Billy Crystal brought Mike alive in “Monsters Inc.” and Larry the Cable Guy was a perfect fit for Mater in “Cars.”
We know the characters, but sometimes we don’t exactly know the voices because the characters cover up the celebrities so well. Here are some actors that have voiced Pixar characters that we may have forgotten about:
Remember Hopper from “A Bug’s Life?”
Well that specific bag guy bug is voiced by none other than Kevin Spacey. “A Bug’s Life” was Pixar’s second movie, and Oscar-winner Spacey did an amazing job voicing the evil grasshopper.
What about Dot from “A Bug’s Life?”
The adorable ant was voiced by Hayden Panettiere before her star-making role in TV series “Heroes.”
This one may be a bit obvious: Sulley is “Monsters Inc.?”
Star of TV series “Roseanne” and 14-time host of “Saturday Night Live,” John Goodman voiced Sully, the loveable monster.
Dory in “Finding Nemo?”
Again, pretty obvious. Dory was voiced by talk show host Ellen DeGeneres in Pixar’s biggest hit, “Finding Nemo.”
The icy Frozone in “The Incredibles?”
Samuel L. Jackson voiced the “superhero.”
Remember WALL-E being aboard that spaceship?
In the movie “WALL-E”, the silly robot finds himself aboard a giant spaceship seemingly holding the remainder of the human race. Star of the “Alien” movie series, Sigourney Weaver voiced the computer aboard the ship.
