Emergency natural gas outage

Facilities, Planning and Management has released a notification that a contractor hit a 2-inch gas main while excavating near Hoover Hall resulting in no natural gas at Black Engineering Building, along with Hoover, Howe and Sweeney halls.

Officials were notified at 10:50 a.m. Thursday and are investigating how to repair the pipe.

“We don’t anticipate any danger at this time,” said Facilities, Planning and Management engineer Mike Murray. “We are in the process of shutting the gas off now.”

FPM encourages anyone to share information regarding this emergency utility outage with others in your building or department to assure proper faculty, staff and students are notified.

UPDATE:

Murray said Hoover Hall and Black Hall were temporarily evacuated as a precautionary measure, but the gas has now been shut off and no further safety concerns are warranted.

He said it is safe to return to all buildings on campus.
