One man is dead after being shot in the head at 1421 Idaho Avenue in Ames.

According to a press release, the Ames Police Department received a report of a shooting at 1 a.m. on Saturday morning. When officers arrived, they found a male with a gunshot wound to the head. The male was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

Witnesses reported hearing an argument and several gun shots outside of the residence prior to the arrival of the officers. Police believe an altercation occurred in the backyard before the victim pulled out a gun. After a physical fight between the victim and one of the men, the other male retrieved the handgun and shot the victim in the head, perhaps multiple times.

The Des Moines Register reported that Commander Jason Tuttle of the Ames Police Department said two males live at the duplex, and the victim was a guest from out of state.

Both men were released after being brought in for questioning because the police are currently considering the incident to be a case of self defense.

Police said there does not appear to be any ongoing danger to the public.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification to the next of kin.

Investigation into this shooting continues by the Ames Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
