Watch your apps

According to a study from online security company, AVG Technologies, the most used apps — messaging, social media and streaming entertainment — are the biggest battery killers.

The biggest of those big battery-guzzling apps are those that start up automatically when your phone turns on, no matter if you choose to open that particular app of not. For example, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, RetailMeNot, Kik and WhatsApp are constantly running in the background of your phone, checking for updates and messages to push to you.

Apps that don’t start automatically, but still kill your battery quickly include Kindle, Snapchat, Spotify, Walmart, Netflix, Amazon and LINE. The good news is that they only beat up your battery life when you’re actively using them.

As far as games go, AVG found that Candy Crush Saga, Candy Crush Soda Saga, Clash of Clans, Crossy Road and Solitaire take the most battery.

Limit stuff

Opt out of push notifications, reduce the number of times you refresh a feed or app, turn off connectivity — like Wi-Fi, location and Bluetooth — when you can, dim your screen brightness and limit the use of your GPS when possible.
