Freshman leaps into nationals with personal record in long jump

Jhoanmy Luque saved her best attempt for last in the women’s long jump at the NCAA West Preliminaries on Friday in Austin, Texas. 

With a 20-feet-10.5-inch mark, The freshman from Valencia, Carabobo, Venezuela, finished fifth place overall in the event and earned a qualifying bid to the NCAA Outdoor Championship in Eugene, Ore. on June 10-13. She also broke her personal record in the event by more than six inches.

Luque’s new career-best mark ranks her second on Iowa State’s all-time performers list. 

Redshirt senior Katy Moen will join Luque in Eugene after finishing 10th in the 10,000-meter run. 

Juniors Alyssa Gonzalez and Perez Rotich, senior Kendra White and freshman Evelyne Guay advanced to the quarterfinals in the 400-meter hurdles, 1,500-meter run, 400-meter dash and 800-meter run, respectively. 

Running events for Iowa State will begin with the 400-meter dash at 6 p.m. Friday.
