Maintenance work on U.S. 30 bridge to temporarily close shared use path

Maintenance work on the U.S. 30 bridge crossing the South Skunk River will require temporarily closing the shared use path under the bridge that connects Southeast 16th Street to the Hunziker Youth Sports Complex.

Vehicles on the highway will not be affected. Work is scheduled to begin on Memorial Day (Monday, May 25) and continue for approximately two weeks.

Crews hired by the Iowa Department of Transportation will be removing loose paint on both the eastbound and westbound sections of the bridge, collecting the paint chips for proper disposal and repainting the bridge. The equipment necessary to capture the paint pieces will hang low below the bridge creating a hazard for any path users, and the path will not be accessible during the duration of the maintenance.

“We realize closing the path under the bridge will be inconvenient to users, and we apologize for the inconvenience,” said Traffic Engineer Damion Pregitzer. “However, closing the path was identified as the fastest and safest way to finish the work on the bridge above and reopen the path.”
