Cyclones take majority of sets in spring tournament

The ISU volleyball team played in its annual Iowa State Spring Tournament and defended its home turf by taking seven of ten sets. The matches were two sets apiece. 

Concordia-St. Paul College Golden Bears

Iowa State started the day against Division II powerhouse Concordia-St. Paul. The Golden Bears won seven straight Division II titles from 2007-2013.

Iowa State and Concordia traded points until just after the halfway mark in the match, when the Golden Bears grabbed a 16-15 lead. Iowa State took hold of the rest of the set, claiming 10 of the last 13 points and cruising to a 25-19 win. 

The teams traded blows in the second set as well until Concordia rattled off five straight points to take a 19-15 lead. The Cyclones tried their best to mount a comeback, but the Golden Bears were able to take the second set 25-21.

University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks

The Cyclones were able to dominate the Mavericks throughout the two sets, winning 25-7 and 25-10. 

Iowa state jumped to a 10-3 lead in the first set and was able to take 15 of the last 19 points in the win. 

The second set was much of the same with the Cyclones starting strong and taking a 12-2 lead. The Mavericks stayed within 11 points, but Iowa State remained firm and won its third set on the day.

Missouri Tigers

Iowa State was down 4-1 early but was able to take five straight points to pull up by two. Later in the set, the Cyclones were tied at 13 but grabbed eight of the next 11 points to take a 20-16 lead.

Missouri nabbed three of the next four points, but Iowa State was too much and won a 25-19 victory. 

In the second set, Missouri took a commanding 9-2 lead. The Cyclones were able to to pull within two, but the Tigers didn’t allow the comeback and won 25-20.

Northern Iowa

Northern Iowa gave Iowa State fits in the first set, keeping the Cyclones at bay throughout. Iowa State tied it at 21 but couldn’t keep enough momentum to win, losing 25-23.

The second set played just as close, with the score tying nine times. Iowa State prevailed, though, 25-23.

North Dakota State

The Cyclones and Bison swapped points until the 10-point mark, when the Cyclones went on a seven-point streak to take a 16-10 lead. Iowa State kept North Dakota at arm’s length and ended with a 25-17 victory.

The Cyclones turned on their serving game in the last set of the day, notching multiple aces. They took their eighth set 25-14 against North Dakota.
