Dustin Hogue arrested for drunk driving
April 17, 2015
Update 10:25 a.m.
Former ISU basketball player Dustin Hogue was arrested just before 3 a.m. on the morning of April 16 for operating while intoxicated.
Aaron DeLashmutt, Patrol Captain for the ISU Police Department, said that Hogue’s black Nissan was seen parked in the parking lot of the North Central Regional Plant Introduction Station, which works in cooperation with Iowa State, particularly the agronomy department. Because the site is technically still part of the ISU campus, the jurisdiction fell to ISU police.
DeLashmutt characterized a parked car in that area as “somewhat suspicious at that time of night.”
“We approached the vehicle and the driver got out,” DeLashmutt explained. “[Hogue] smelled strongly of alcoholic beverage, his speech was slurred, and he admitted to consuming alcohol early in the night.”
DeLashmutt added that field sobriety tests were then administered, at which Hogue performed poorly. Hogue was then put under arrest for OWI and transported to the Story County jail.
Hogue later took a breathalyzer test and blew a .118, which is .038 above the legal limit. Although Hogue was not technically driving his vehicle at the time he was stopped and questioned by police, even being in the driver’s seat of a car while intoxicated is enough to merit an arrest for OWI.
DeLashmutt confirmed that Hogue was in the parked vehicle alone.
First Report
Former ISU basketball player Dustin Hogue was arrested in the early morning hours of April 16 and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI), according to the Iowa Courts Online website.
It was Hogue’s first OWI offense, and it comes a month after he suited up for the final time in an ISU uniform.
Hogue started all 70 games during his time at Iowa State, posting career numbers of 9.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. His defining moment for the Cyclones came in the Sweet 16 of the 2014 NCAA tournament when he stepped up to fill in offensively for the injured Georges Niang, scoring 34 points in an ISU loss to the eventual national champion UConn Huskies.
Hogue was consistently described by coaches and teammates as a leader on the team and had been charged only without possessing a valid driver’s license during his residence in Story County, according to Iowa Courts Online. That charge came in November of 2014.
Turmoil has surrounded current and former members of the ISU basketball program in recent days, as Des Moines-area native and former ISU player Kourtlin Jackson was arrested for public intoxication and assault with injury on April 17. It is the same day ISU coach Fred Hoiberg is set to have open heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minneapolis, Minn.
