Shook Twins come to Maintenance Shop
April 14, 2015
Shook Twins, an indie folk-pop band, will play at the Maintenance Shop Wednesday evening.
The group consists of identical twins, Katelyn and Laurie Shook, Kyle Volkman and Niko Daoussis. They are originally from Sandpoint, Idaho, but moved to Portland after releasing their first album, “You Can Have the Rest,” in 2008.
Shook Twins tour all over the country at festivals and other events. They have performed with artists such as Ryan Adams, Carolina Chocolate Drops, JJ Grey and MoFro, The Indigo Girls and The Lumineers.
Shook Twins’s most recent album, “What We Do,” was released in April 2014. The band incorporates acoustic instrumentation such as the banjo, guitar, bass, mandolin, ukelele, glockenspiel and djembe.
Lara Hetherton, freshman in pre-industrial design, said Shook Twins’ new single, “Away,” is catchy.
“It’s [“Always”] pretty laid back and I could see myself really liking their other stuff,” Hetherton said.
According to the Maintenance Shop co-director, Natasha Porizkova, other students will enjoy Shook Twins for their folky sound.
“We also have Extraversion opening and they’re a local band. That will bring some people out,” Porizkova said.
This universe alternative folk band is based in Des Moines. Extravision has played at the Maintenance Shop before, most recently at the Ames Winter Classic in December.
“I think they [Extravision] have some really good songs. I know a lot of my friends like them, too,” Hetherton said.
Shook Twins and Extravision will play at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Maintenance Shop. This will be the Shook Twins first visit to Iowa State. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are are $10 with a student ID and $15 for the public, with a $2 increase the day of the show.
