Song of the week: Wet – “Deadwater”

Jake Christensen

It’s been nine months since anybody has heard from the highly-hyped Massachusetts trio Wet. It turns out they’ve been doing anything but relaxing or taking a break from music. Instead, they’ve been hard at work on the tracks for their new debut LP, “Don’t You,” which is now finalized and scheduled for release by the end of the year (via Columbia).

Wet has finally shared the first single off “Don’t You” and it comes in the form of a sticky-sweet, sprawling, airy track called “Deadwater.” The song sounds exactly like what fans have come to know the band for: gorgeous choruses, unforgettable verses and clean, smooth-sounding harmonies.

In “Deadwater,” we find Kelly Zutrau singing about treading water and trying to carry the dead weight of a relationship. As usual, Wet transforms the sounds of R&B and tropicalia into a bittersweet and hazy ballad. After all, don’t pop songs sound all the better when they’re about tragedy rather than ignorant bliss? “Shaky and I’m on my knees/ There are better things for me,” Zutrau sings confidently about an uncertain future.
