Four awesome super foods

Acai

This one is pretty widely known, but still important. Pronounced ah-SAH-ee, the acai is a small berry found in the rain forests of South America. It’s known for its high levels of antioxidants in the form of anthocyanins, which is reported to help fight cancer and heart disease. Acai typically comes in preserved forms, but health-wise, it’s best to avoid acai juice because it usually contains extra sugar. Fresh acai isn’t often available, so stick with the tablets, powders and frozen acai.

Cacao/Cocoa Powder

Cacao powder contains flavonoids, which are known to help lower blood pressure and improve blood circulation. There are about 15 calories per tablespoon, and there’s no fat content. Basically, cocoa powder gives you the chocolate flavor without the bad stuff. But be careful when purchasing your cocoa powder because processed powder takes away up to 90 percent of the antioxidants. Look out for the terms “Dutch” or “alkalized” because those are giveaways that the powder is processed. Choose “raw” or “non alkalized” cocoa powder.

 Hemp Seeds

Yes, hemp seeds are related to marijuana. No, they don’t contain amounts of the psychoactive ingredient that so many smokers desire. These seeds are actually pretty awesome because they’re high in protein, contain omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, are a good source of amino acids and also give you magnesium and potassium.

Maca Powder

Maca powder isn’t as common but it’s pretty awesome. Maca is a root vegetable grown in the Andes. It’s picked, dried and processed into a powder that features mixed health benefits. On the plus side, maca can boost energy, endurance and libido. It’s also an adaptogen, which helps undo damage from fatigue, regeneration and repair. It’s versatile, too, because it can be baked, sprinkled or blended into many things.
