ISU defensive back Kamari Cotton-Moya was taken to the hospital by ambulance after suffering an undisclosed injury during football practice at the Bergstrom Football Complex, a team spokesperson told the Daily.

ISU coach Paul Rhoads said the injury was to the head and that Cotton-Moya was placed on a backboard.

“Kamari was transported to the hospital after an injury occurred at the end of practice,” Rhoads said, according to tweets by the @CycloneFB account. “It’s too early to diagnose, but serious enough where they put him in a backboard. We will have more information later this week.”

Ames dispatch reported to first responders that a 20-year-old male was breathing but unresponsive after a collision in the south end zone of the Bergstrom facility, according to the police scanner.

Rhoads and ISU President Steven Leath were seen sitting in the Mary Greeley waiting room the afternoon after the incident.

Teammate Brett Medders tweeted a photo late in the afternoon with the caption, “Kamari is alert and doing good!!”

Cotton-Moya was the team’s leading tackler last season, recording 77 tackles after starting 11 of the team’s 12 games. He also recorded eight pass break-ups and a recovered fumble. He was named Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year and earned first-team Freshman All-America honors by the FWAA.
