M-Shop Hosts Aaron Carter
March 6, 2015
There was a chorus of high-pitched screams filling the Maintenance Shop Wednesday night. Screams and some throwback ’90s pop songs sung by popstar Aaron Carter.
Known for his preteen singing career with hits like “That’s How I Beat Shaq” and “Aaron’s Party,” Carter was a heartthrob for many young girls. After taking a break from the music scene for almost eight years, Carter returned in 2013 with his “After Party Tour.”
Last night’s show kicked off with New York-native band Lineup Atlantic. This is is a two man band with singer/guitarist Dan Edwards and drummer Ed Bentzlin. Although they have only been an official group for about eight months, they have already released two singles on iTunes.
Lineup Atlantic interacted with the crowd by encouraging the audience to sing along to their cover performances. They played their two original songs, “Say Today” and “Keep On Keeping On” as the opening and closing songs for their show.
Both “Say Today” and “Keep On Keeping On” were upbeat songs with catchy lyrics.
“We just start with an idea, even a small idea, whether it’s lyrics or music,” Edwards said, describing Lineup Atlantic’s songwriting process.
When Aaron Carter finally arrived on stage, the crowd went crazy. Most of the members in the audience were female and had once been a fan of Aaron Carter.
Freshmen Rachel Fornaris, Madison Sisk and Cristina Cuhel have been fans of Carter since his appearance on the TV show Lizzie McGuire in 2001.
“He looked so good in that shiny vest,” Sisk said.
Surprisingly with the small M-Shop stage, Carter was able to show off some dance moves during the show with the help of his single backup dancer. Unfortunately, it was obvious during the dance numbers that Carter was lip-syncing.
Carter sang multiple new songs from his upcoming album, which is expected to be released this year. The audience received this new music well, but it wasn’t until Carter performed his older, well-known hits the crowd began to go wild.
“I thought it was really surprising with all of his new stuff. I really enjoyed it,” said Lindsay Kayser, senior in advertising.
The highlight of the night was Carter’s closing songs, “I Want Candy” and “Aaron’s Party.” Most of the crowd was jumping, dancing and singing along at the end of the concert.
“I thought it was awesome … I’ve never seen him in concert before,” said Kari Techentin, senior in animal ecology.
