Hydrant flushing to begin in Ames
March 30, 2015
The Ames Public Works Department will begin its annual fire hydrant flushing program on Wednesday.
The purpose of flushing the hydrants is to keep the safest and highest quality of water. It also helps to remove mineral deposits and sediments from water mains and ensures that fire hydrants and valves are working properly, according to a press release.
The first area of flushing will take place in the central part of Ames. Residents are asked to use caution when travelling near flushing crews because water may accumulate in these areas.
The water flow may also be disrupted during flushing and water may be discolored as sediment is flushed out of the system. Because of discoloration, Ames residents should avoid using hot water for washing dishes and laundry. Running the cold water taps for a few minutes can help flush discolored water out of pipes.
Rust remover is available for free at the City Hall information desk if flushing causes rust stains.
