Only two out of the seven ISU wrestlers who made the trek to the NCAA tournament have advanced to the second round of the tournament, while the others will wrestle in the consolation rounds.

At 133 pounds, Earl Hall was able to secure a 7-4 victory against Nebraska’s Eric Montoya. Hall, who racked up a minute and a half of riding time, will continue his quest for a championship against Purdue’s Danny Sabatello (27-8).

Two-time All-American Kyven Gadson also stays alive in the championship hunt after a technical fall against Northern Iowa’s Basil Minto. Gadson will wrestle Eastern Michigan’s Anthony Abro (25-12).

In arguably the biggest upset of the first round, Iowa State’s Michael Moreno, who was seeded No. 2 at 165 pounds, was defeated in a 7-5 decision against Nebraska’s Austin Wilson (17-14). Moreno was down 5-0 after the first period and began to mount a comeback in the third, but the deficit proved to be too much and Wilson took the victory. Moreno will wrestle Oregon State’s Seth Thomas in the first consolation round.

Dante Rodriguez, Gabe Moreno, Tanner Weatherman and Lelund Weatherspoon also lost their first round matches and all will wrestle in the first consolation round.

The second round and first consolation round begin tonight at 6 p.m.
