Denmark defeats United States in soccer match

On Wednesday, the United States men’s national soccer team faced off against Denmark. While United States forward Jozy Altidore and Aron Jóhannsson supplied goals for the U.S., the U.S. still fell short due to Nicklas Bendtner’s three-goal tally, forcing the U.S. to lose the match 3-2.

The United States was able to take the lead on two occasions but after each goal, Denmark was able to respond with a goal of their own. However, it was in the 91st minute when Bendtner put away the game winner. U.S. Soccer reported that in the final minutes of the game the U.S. was very close to equalizing from a cross from midfielder Michael Bradley that was played to John Brooks, whose header went wide from the goal.

Next on the list for the U.S. is to travel to Zurich where they will face off against Switzerland on Tuesday. Following the World Cup that occurred during the summer, the U.S. and head coach Jurgen Klinsmann have been trying out new tactics and strategies, particularly giving young talented players a call to represent their country.

Throughout the past few games for the U.S. the team has had trouble closing out matches by giving up late goals, and this game was no different. ESPN reported that in the last 12 games the U.S. has given up 12 goals from the 80th minute and are 2-6-3 since their first game against Ghana in the World Cup. Giving up late goals is going to be a big problem for the U.S. and is something they are going to have to figure out if they are going to have any success.

Since their last game against Panama, which they won 2-0, the U.S. had seven different starters and the whole defensive line was different. However, U.S. players such as Clint Dempsey, Jermaine Jones, Matt Besler, and Omar Gonzalez did not play in this match, so there is no reason to start panicking yet.

Even though this was a difficult loss for the U.S. and was a game that they definitely could have won, there are still a couple positives to take away from the game. Jozy Altidore scored, which is great to see, Michael Bradley was creative and controlled the midfield well and goalie Nick Rimando got more experience in the net. With World Cup Qualifying coming up, the U.S. will continue to try out new players and lineups to not only win the qualifying games, but to find the players who will best represent the U.S. in the next World Cup.
