GE refrigerator brews coffee
March 5, 2015
Ice-makers and water taps and touchscreens, oh my! Over the years, refrigerators have made ridiculous changes and advancements, but this one may take the cake. General Electric thinks the newest fridge accessory has to be … wait for it … a coffee maker. Makes sense, right? Cold storage appliance that brews hot coffee?
GE is charging a hefty $3,300 for a Café series refrigerator that includes a built-in Keurig (GMCR) K-Cup coffee brewer. To make a cup, you snap the brewer out of the fridge’s water tap, put in a K-Cup and slide the brewer back into the water dispenser. After asking you what size you’d like, the fridge heats its own filtered water and voilà.
As crazy as it may seem, this isn’t the first “opposites attract” sort of appliance relationship. During the last couple years, GE has sold refrigerators featuring hot water dispensers, a pioneering move in the industry.
A GE survey of people who had purchased the hot-water-dispensing refrigerators revealed that some were wondering when a coffee or tea-dispensing refrigerator would hit the market. Well, those dreams are coming true and are projected to hit stores later this year.
