ISU splits doubleheader at the Rebel Classic

Iowa State’s offensive woes continued into the first game of its doubleheader against Houston.

The Cyclones failed to score against the Cougars, losing 5-0. The Cougars scored four runs in the second and added their final run in the sixth.

The second game of the doubleheader was a different tale. The Cyclones regained their offense against the University of California, Santa Barbara.

The Cyclones jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as sophomore Rachel Hartman brought home junior Brittany Gomez.

In the second, the Cyclones tacked on two more runs as freshman Kelsey McFarland scored on a throwing error and senior Jorden Spendlove was brought home by Gomez.

UCSB tied the score 3-3 during the top of the third. The tie did not last long as the Cyclones put home five runs during the bottom of the third. The Cyclones scored on a throwing error by freshman Kalia Konz, followed by junior Sammie Hildreth bringing home McFarland, Gomez hitting home both Spendlove and Hildreth, and Gomez being brought home by senior Lexi Slater.

The Cyclone lead did not last long either, however, as UCSB tied the game up at eight apiece in the fourth.

Once again, the Cyclones took the lead back during the bottom of the fourth as Gomez brought home Spendlove and McFarland, and Slater knocked in Hildreth and Gomez, pushing the ISU lead to 12-8.

The Cyclones still weren’t done, as they tallied four more runs in the fifth and final inning, claiming a 16-8 victory.

Iowa State will try to keep the offensive momentum rolling as it plays Eastern Kentucky 1 p.m. March 8 to round out the Rebel Classic.
