ISU women’s golf has chance to improve record against top competition in Puerto Rico
February 13, 2015
Through five events, it is evident that the ISU women’s golf team has not shied away from competition.
ISU coach Christie Martens has thrown her freshman-laden team into the fire in 2014-15 with the 26th-ranked schedule, according to Golfweek. The schedule’s difficulty is projected to climb further up the rankings after the statisticians take into account last week’s UCF Challenge and the upcoming Lady Puerto Rico Classic, which features five top-25 teams in the field.
No. 32 Iowa State will travel to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico on Feb. 15 to take on a field that also includes two top-10 teams and only two squads outside the top-100 in Golfweek’s rankings.
The event provides Iowa State with an opportunity to improve its respectable 48-28-1 record on the season, but also another chance to take down some top-25 teams, a feat the Cyclones have had difficulty achieving.
On the season, Iowa State is 3-18 against its top-25 counterparts. It will get its first crack against the likes of No. 7 Arkansas and No. 17 LSU this week, as well as a chance at revenge against No. 9 Northwestern, a team that is 3-0 against Iowa State.
For Chonlada Chayanun, it is a chance to quickly forget a squandered opportunity on Feb. 10 at the UCF Challenge. In benign conditions, Chayanun raced out to rounds of 67 and 69 and was tied for the lead, only to finish tied for 24th after an 81 in blustery conditions.
“I am ready for the next tournament,” Chayanun said after the final round. “I thought I played great, I just had a tough day today. Overall, I still feel like I can play better this tournament. It doesn’t affect my confidence.”
Her confidence will likely be bolstered upon her return to the confines of the Rio Mar Country Club.
In her career, the senior has three top-20 finishes at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic and has been in the 70s all nine rounds.
While Chayanun’s teammate, freshman Celia Barquin, has yet to carve out her own success in Puerto Rico, she has been the catalyst for the Cyclones’ success thus far this year.
Barquin has led or co-led Iowa State in four of five events this season and is coming off of a top-10 finish at the UCF Challenge on the strength of three rounds of par or better.
The Rio Mar Country Club will be new to her, along with freshmen M.J. Kamin and Nattapan Siritrai, but a chance for Barquin to venture to a fellow Spanish-speaking land is a welcome sight for the Spaniard.
“I’ve never been there, but I can’t wait,” Barquin said. “I think it’s going to be so much fun. My teammates say they have so much fun there. It’s a really nice golf course. Everyone speaks Spanish, so it’ll feel like home for me.”
