Workerbee Records celebrates release of compilation tape
February 16, 2015
Workerbee Records of Ames celebrated the release of a compilation tape, titled “I Promise To Be No-Good,” by hosting a free show at the Iowa Music Store on Feb. 13.
The tape includes music from garage bands across the world, including the French group Double Cheese, British group Love L.U.V., Electric Healing Sound from California, Switchblade Cheetah from Florida, “Shitstorm” from Missouri and three Iowa bands: the Goldblums, Person Wale and the Vahnavants. The Goldblums, “Person Wale” and the Vahnavants performed at the Friday night show.
The British alternative pop group Love L.U.V. released a debut EP last December and the group’s title track, “Come See Me,” which is featured on the compilation tape being released by Workerbee Records on Feb. 20. The four members include Lucy Doyle on vocals, Tommy Atkins on guitar, Steve Quigley on drums and Jessica Turner on keys.
Doyle’s voice is uniquely high pitched, which is not very popular among pop artists. The sound of her voice could be compared to that of Grouplove’s Hannah Hooper or Charli XCX. Unlike other pop artists, Doyle sings specific in key with what sounds like little help from autotune. Though her voice is quite girly, it doesn’t squeak or lack power when keeping up with the rock vibe of the simple music behind her.
Simple strumming paired with a rough sound is the best way to describe Atkins’ playing style. Similar to the Black Keys in sound, Love L.U.V. includes a simple drum beat and funky keyboard patterns to personalize their style. Quigley and Turner’s simple yet fun sound gives more room for interesting vocals and lyrics, which Love L.U.V. has both of.
A fun band with a catchy sound, Love L.U.V.’s debut EP is a must when organizing a spring/summer playlist. The poppy sounds of the group are fun and carefree, perfect for warm weather relaxing. The grunge-like guitar sound adds a very chill rock vibe to the already carefree sound. The band’s unique style and catchy sound gives a lot of potential for the group’s journey in the world of music.
