Same rival, different format faces ISU swimming and diving

The same rival faces ISU swimming and diving in Lawrence, Kan., but in a different context.
The final dual meet for a storied senior class and opportunities for individual and collective prestige present themselves to ISU swimming and diving Feb. 6 and 7.
In the 2014-15 season, the Cyclones have gathered up seven dual meet victories. With a win at Kansas, their win total would reach eight, tying a school record for dual-meet wins in a season.
ISU swimming and diving traveled to Kansas earlier this season for an invitational hosted by the Jayhawks. Iowa State claimed second place out of five competing teams, finishing behind Kansas.
The upcoming meet hosted by the Jayhawks is a dual meet format, which is different from an invitational format. In a dual meet, it is crucial to win races because that is where the bulk of the points are found. Invitational formats also do not contain diving. Iowa State will have its divers there to boost scoring even further.
Iowa State is searching for a split against Kansas on the season, having fallen in the invitational format earlier in the year. The Cyclones captured a split last season and are hopeful for a similar result this time around.
Coach Duane Sorenson wants the split for this team and his seniors. He said that tying the school record for wins would mean a lot to both him and his swimmers.
“It would be special for this group and this group of seniors because they put a lot of work into it and they’ve just been winners every year,” Sorenson said.
Coach Kelly Nordell wants her team to be focused from top to bottom in order to get the best result.
“In order to beat [Kansas] in a dual meet format, we need to perform well as a team,” Nordell said. “It cannot just be one or two women. It has to be a total team effort.”
A total team effort for the win comes first and foremost, but the opportunity within reach for sprinter Amanda Paulson adds something extra to the intensity of the event.
Paulson will have the opportunity to reach 100 career victories and then some at Kansas this weekend. After falling one win short of triple digits for her career on senior day against West Virginia, she is hopeful for the achievement. Paulson earned seven victories in the water against Northern Iowa and West Virginia.
“I think it’s more fun and suspenseful this way,” Paulson said. “I’m looking forward to the extra adrenaline. It would be great to get to 100 and beat [Kansas].”
ISU swimming and diving travels to Lawrence, Kan. to take on the Jayhawks at 6 p.m. Feb. 6 and 10 a.m. Feb. 7.
