It was the hot item on the runway throughout fall and into the winter months. Faux fur was everywhere, from oversized coats and fuzzy vests to luxe collars and sleek gloves, but will the fur trend continue on campus with winter in full swing and spring approaching?

The recent spells of snow and unforgiving winds have some students opting for warmer, more functional alternatives to their trendy fur garments. Although easier to maintain than real fur, faux fur can be damaged with exposure to rain and snow just the same, creating mangy patches impossible to undo.

Kayla Finn, sophomore in event management, offered her take on wearing fur during this rough winter weather.

“I love wearing my fur coat out and about for stylish reasons and warmth,” Finn said. “But with this crazy blizzard going on, I need to switch to my longer parka that is more practical.”

College students rarely have time to complete their daily to-do lists, nonetheless have time to hand wash and treat their high-maintenance fur garbs. Thankfully, woolly snow boots are emerging as a popular campus trend with brands like The North Face, Sorel and Ugg. These winter essentials provide a subtle, yet stylish approach to the fur craze.

Not only are snow boots on-trend, but they’re made with durable synthetic fibers that can withstand the slushy trek from class to class.

Anna Douglas, junior in elementary education, said her Sorel snow boots are a necessity for trudging through the unplowed sidewalks with their faux fur trim keeping her feet warm.

“My Sorels are my go-to shoe for this winter because I don’t have to worry about stepping through snow or getting them wet,” Douglas said. “They are the perfect everyday accessory to spice up even a plain sweater and leggings.”

Styling faux fur for spring poses fewer obstacles. Those fur coats and vests tucked away in the closet can be dusted off and updated for a fresh take on the fall fashion. An oversized fur coat paired with a simple skirt and blouse gives an ordinary outfit a touch of unexpected glamour. Give a jeans and T-shirt look some spice with a shaggy fur vest for a chic rocker vibe. Transition winter accessories to spring with a faux fur clutch or purse in a neutral color to compliment vibrant spring color palettes.

Fur can be a main feature or an accent detail. Consider functionality as well as style when contemplating the faux fur trend. When styled smart, fur can be a luxurious staple year-round.
