McKay making the most of his starts

Jameel McKay joined the ISU basketball program with lofty expectations to be the rim-protecting defender and dominant post presence on offense that the Cyclones had lacked under Fred Hoiberg.

It’s safe to say, he hasn’t disappointed.

After sitting out the team’s first nine games, McKay came off the bench to give the team some size. However, the Cyclones struggled to get into a clear rhythm, going 7-4 in McKay’s first 11 games.

After a loss on the road to Kansas, McKay made his first start in place of Bryce Dejean-Jones against Texas Tech, sparking a 4-game streak of spectacular play that has resulted in a 3-1 record, with the only loss coming on the road to Oklahoma.

Here are McKay’s stats after his four starts:

15.5 points per game

9.8 rebounds per game

3.0 blocks per game

1.3 steals per game

19-for-28 from the field — 67.9 percent

24-for-37 from the free throw line — 64.9 percent
