Even the Hilton Magic was not enough to grant Iowa State victory against Minnesota as a series of mishaps on multiple events inhibited the team’s score from eclipsing that seemingly elusive total score of 196.000.

An early deficit was only augmented by a combination of ISU imperfections and solid performances from Minnesota as Iowa State fell to the Gophers by a score of 196.350-194.125. This result was Iowa State’s lowest score at Hilton Coliseum this season.

Haylee Young, the anchor of the vault competition for the Cyclones, led the team in the event to commence the meet, scoring a 9.875 to contribute to a combined score of 48.900 for Iowa State. Unfortunately for the Cyclones, the team failed to produce a higher event score for the remainder of the meet.

After falling behind 49.000-48.900 in the opening event, Iowa State saw its deficit increase after mistakes plagued its overall score on the uneven bars, posting a 48.425 compared to Minnesota’s 49.300 on the vault. The Golden Gophers held the lead by nearly an entire point at the midpoint of the match.

Additional miscues, including three falls to begin the balance beam, combined with fairly clean routines from the Gophers proved to be enough to prevent an ISU comeback despite Young matching her career-high all-around score of 39.325.

Young was also presented with the Mari-Rae Sopper award for her performance on the floor exercise, logging a score of 9.850.

Iowa State will look to rebound on the road when it squares off against Penn, Penn State and Brockport State at 3 p.m. in State College, Pa.
