American sniper’s alleged killer to be put on trial

Peter O'Brien

On Feb. 11, Eddie Ray Routh, the accused killer of Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield will be put on trial for their murders in Stephenville, Texas. Chris Kyle was an elite Navy Seal sniper whose life was depicted in the book and now the motion picture, “American Sniper,” and is the most lethal sniper in the history of the United States.

According to a report from USA Today, Routh’s lawyers have motioned for an alternative location for the trial rather than Stephenville, Texas. With all of the hype that has come from the movie and how much publicity the town is receiving, Routh’s lawyers fear that all of that publicity could have an impact on the trial. The motion for the alternative location has not been accepted or declined yet, but as of now, the trial will be taking place Feb. 11.

The film “American Sniper” has been extremely successful at box offices worldwide and not only was the movie very well accepted by viewers, it also left a strong emotional impact. Small spoiler alert, at the end of the film there is a scene that explains that Chris Kyle was killed by a United States veteran who he was trying to help. This statement creates a very strong feeling of sadness and it is no surprise that this murder trial will generate lots of publicity.

USA Today reported that District Judge Jason Cashon has issued guidelines that will limit media coverage at the trial. There will only be one video camera allowed in the courtroom, but it will have to tape the trial through a window and there will not be any audio recording. Also, there will be no computers or phones inside.

According to a report from ABC News, Routh was a former Marine who had been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. After his last tour in Iraq, Kyle would work with veterans who were suffering with readjusting to normal life, and on that particular day, Kyle and his neighbor Chad Littlefield had taken Routh to a gun range. In this moment, Routh allegedly turned on Kyle and Littlefield and shot them both and fled the scene before being caught by the authorities.

With all of the hype around not only the film, but around all of the respect and love there is for Kyle and Littlefield, there is no question that this trial will have a strong impact on a lot of people throughout the country.
