Mars One expedition narrows finalists
February 18, 2015
More than 200,000 people have applied to Mars One in order to participate on a trip to Mars. Mars One is an organization that is planning to establish a human colony on Mars. According to a report from USA Today, Mars One has reduced the number of applicants to 100 finalists. Those finalists can expect to be sent to Mars in 2024.
However, USA Today reported that while there are 100 finalists, Mars One plans to narrow its search down to four astronauts to launch this campaign to another planet.
There is no doubt that this expedition will be life-changing and will be another large step for mankind. Out of the 100 finalists for the expedition, more than 30 of them are from the United States, which could make another historical mark for the United States. In 1969, the United States successfully launched Apollo 11, the first manned mission to the moon. However, if the astronauts are able to make it to the planet and land on it, there is no prediction of if they will be able to survive or even make it back to Earth.
According to a report from USA Today, the cost of putting these four astronauts on Mars will cost approximately $6 billion. With all of the money that is being sent into this project, the officials at Mars One will be strongly hoping for a successful mission.
This is kind of like a real-life situation from the film “Interstellar.” Not to reveal any spoilers, but a plot in the film is that different astronauts are sent to remote and faraway planets to see if human life can succeed there. However, the astronauts are not sure if the planet they are going to are even safe and if something goes wrong, there is no guarantee that they will be able to leave the planet and make it back. While this is just a film, this mission from Mars One is quite similar.
The four astronauts who are chosen to take on this mission will undoubtedly be courageous beyond measure and will be a part of the next great event in history. With just less than 10 years left until Mars One plans to launch this mission, it has time to narrow down its search for the four most ideal candidates and to do all possible to make sure this mission is successful.
If the mission goes according to plan, it could be quite possible that by the year 2025 there could be human colonies on Mars.
