GAMER: No. 11 Iowa State 75, Texas Tech 38

Alex Gookin

The Lowdown

After a slow and sloppy start, Iowa State was able to avenge its loss to the Red Raiders in Lubbock with a 75-38 win at Hilton Coliseum.

Jameel McKay made his first start of the season in place of Bryce Dejean-Jones and didn’t disappoint. He finished with a career-high 17 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.

Naz Long also got hot, hitting 3-of-6 threes in his 15-point effort. Abdel Nader scored nine and Georges Niang scored seven, while Monté Morris dished out six assists with four points.

With more than seven minutes to play, Clayton Custer checked into the game to help start clearing the bench outside of the regular eight-man rotation. Georgios Tsalmpouris and Daniel Edozie each scored three points in their 13 combined minutes of game time.

Iowa State (17-5, 7-3 Big 12) moves into second place in the Big 12 with the win over Texas Tech (12-12, 2-9 Big 12).

The Turning Point

Besides the slow start by both teams, the win was really never in doubt as the Cyclones never trailed in the game. In the team’s loss in Lubbock, the Red Raiders shot lights out but didn’t have the same luck at Hilton, shooting just 30.9 percent from the field.

The X-Factor

Jameel McKay — A career-high 17 points and eight rebounds, along with three blocks and two steals on the defensive end gave McKay perhaps his best all-around game of the season as he made his first start in an ISU jersey.

McKay was 7-for-7 from the floor and recorded three dunks, including an alley-oop from Georges Niang to help the Cyclones break away from the Red Raiders early in the first half.
