What the gas tax increase means for Iowa

  • The legislature approved a 10 cent per gallon increase on gas tax. 
  • The total gas tax is now 22 cents per gallon. The national average for gas tax is 30 cents. 
  • 10-cent increase amounts to about a 45 percent increase, overall.
  • Supporters say the increase will clear up an almost $215 million shortfall in funding for state infrastructure.
  • The Iowa Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) gave Iowa a C- overall in its report card for the conditions of Iowa roads.
