Iowa State splits doubleheader
February 13, 2015
The Cyclones split their doubleheader Feb. 13 at The Battle at the Beach Tournament.
To kick off the two-game set, Iowa State faced off against the Ole Miss Rebels. The game was close through the first three innings, but the turning point came in the form of a fifth inning home run by ISU catcher Rachel Hartman.
The Rebels struck first in the opening inning, but a solo home run by outfielder Brittany Gomez tied the score entering the second. Iowa State grabbed the lead in the second when freshman Nychole Antillon drove in junior Aly Cappaert, giving the Cyclones a 2-1 advantage.
Then in the third, the Rebels answered, tying the game at two apiece. It was the final run the Rebels scored.
In the fifth, Hartman hit a solo home run to break the tie. Then in the sixth, Gomez knocked freshman Kaila Konz across home to make the final score 4-2.
After the contest versus Ole Miss, the Cyclones fell flat against Coastal Carolina.
The first two innings looked bright for Iowa State, as the team took a 3-1 lead in the second after senior Maddie Reese hit a two-run home run and Gomez drove in senior Jorden Spendlove.
After the second inning, it all went downhill for the Cyclones.
Coastal Carolina regained the lead at 5-3 after posting a four-run fourth inning. Coastal Carolina then went on to score five runs in the fifth inning and three runs in the sixth, which made the final tally 13-3 in favor of Coastal Carolina.
The game ended in six innings.
The Cyclones will attempt to bounce back Feb. 14 in a doubleheader against Ole Miss and St. Bonaventure. The first pitches are set to be thrown at 8:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m., respectively.
