Duh, duh, duh duhhhh. Lipstick to the rescue. As if we haven’t already heard dozens of “quick fixes” for various beauty blemishes, here rises yet another. The latest fashion craze includes smearing lipstick under your eyes to cover up dark circles. This seems too crazy and too good to be true, but as far as the pictures show (lol), it seems to work. Whether or not the pictures accurately represent reality, however, is an entirely new question.

Beauty expert Deepica Mutyala swears by the trick, and her YouTube tutorial showing the application technique blew up to about 4 million views within a month of its release. Yes, this crazy practice, seeming to be a cruel joke, is actually a beauty sensation.

So how the heck does this work, right? Well, Today.com’s article tells us all about it. The article says that dark circles are usually green or blue in tone. Looking at the primary color wheel, you see that the opposite colors of green and blue are orange and red. Supposedly, you can apply a bright red color under your eyes to neutralize the blue and green colors you want to cover up.

You’d think this would only apply to certain skin colors, but Today’s article says otherwise. Different skin colors simply require different shades of the lipstick to be used. For example, fair skin would require a more peachy color, whereas darker skin works best with an orange-red.

Along with choosing the color, you can also choose the finish of the lipstick. Though this doesn’t produce a direct effect on the look, it still can make a difference. Today’s article suggests using a moisturized lipstick if you have dry skin, for example.

Now don’t just go about the whole process by coloring your eyes with lipstick, but be smart. Start off by testing out a small area to see if you have the right shade and finish for your skin. Then, if you have that as you want it, use an eye-shadow brush to gradually apply the lipstick around your eyes on any areas you want to fix.

You’re going to look like a nut for a bit, but supposedly it gets better after you apply concealer over the lipstick using a makeup sponge. And wah-lah. Beauty perfection. Keep in mind that this is probably a pretty advanced beauty trick, so practice makes perfect.
