Sky Zone

Located in Grimes — a suburb of Des Moines — Sky Zone is an indoor trampoline park that features an open jump area, a foam pit, a kid’s area, Ultimate Dodgeball and a SkySlam — two single basketball hoops — court.

During the week, it’s open after three in the afternoon, and most of the day Saturday, but still make sure you check the hours online.

You pay by time slots of 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes, but you can also purchase/take part in specials and packages. Also keep in mind that you’ll need to purchase and use special socks that you get to take home with you and use next time. All in all, it isn’t too pricey.

Ohana Steakhouse

Ohana’s is located in West Des Moines and features a teppanyaki-style of dining. In other words, all the food is prepared in front of you on a table grill. The chefs are extremely talented at both preparing the food and doing so in an entertaining way.

If you don’t come in a large group, you’ll often be seated with others at one of the table grills, making for a social dinner where you meet new people and interact with the chef.

Anticipate your meal to be a long event, as it takes roughly an hour or an hour-and-a-half to complete, but you can obviously stay longer. Also realize that you’re going to be tackling a lot of food — there are multiple courses — and a potentially hefty bill.

Flix Brewhouse

Beer, food and a movie. Sounds great, right? Well, Flix Brewhouse recently opened up in Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines.

Featuring eight stadium seating “dining rooms” with high-def projections, wall-to-wall curved screens, comfy seats and Easy Glider moveable table tops, Flix also offers nine personal brews and 38 other draft beers for guests. There’s also wine and non-alcoholic drinks.

There’s also an area open to the public with no ticket requirement, so you can eat and dash, rather than stay for a movie.

Ticket prices for the actual movie follow standard cinema prices.

Iowa Wild hockey game

On Feb. 13, the Iowa Wild hockey team is playing the Texas Stars at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The game starts at 7 p.m. and ticket prices range from about $10 to $50. Tickets may sell out, so buy them in advance to secure your entertainment and avoid booth lines.
