No more hard copy licenses

Peter O'Brien

Ever get tired of carrying your license around or forget it when you need it the most? The state of Delaware may have the perfect solution. Delaware wants to be the first state in the U.S. to offer a virtual driver’s license.

The driver’s license will be on a smartphone app. Delaware, along with Iowa, and 40 other states all share the same driver’s license vendor. According to USA Today, the vendor for these licenses is MorphoTrust USA, and it has been working on a mobile app that could carry a digital version of a driver’s license for the past two years. Earlier in 2014, Iowa was making big strides to be the first state to offer digital driver’s license, but that goal has more so been taken on by Delaware.

Since smartphones are being used more and more commonly, they basically can hold everything you need. With the ability to store music, apps and a lot of other personal information like credit card information, it would make sense for a smart phone to carry a driver’s license.

However, even if Delaware does develop digital driver’s licenses, that does not mean that all residents of Delaware will have to turn in their plastic licenses and download the app. USA Today reported that customers will receive a hard copy of their license and will have the opportunity to purchase a digital copy as well.

It’s not like Delaware is trying to make a lot of money off of this idea, it is more so of just a convenience opportunity for the residents of Delaware. This app would still display all of the information that is found on a hard copy driver’s license, it would just require a personal identification code in order for the ID holder to access the app and display their license.

But smartphones do break down and there is lots of corruption that occurs on the Internet. It would not be surprising to see people a little concerned to see that a lot of their personal information is out on the Internet. A big question that can also be raised is if somebody from Delaware travels to another state would their ID still be verifiable in that state?

There are still lots of questions that need to be answered but Delaware, along with Iowa, is making efforts to make this a reality and a digital copy of a license can be expected to be launched in the near future.
