Iowa State wrestling defeats Penn in 41-3 rout

ISU Men’s Wrestling Wins vs. Penn 41-3

All-American Kyven Gadson got the ball rolling early for Iowa State, scoring a major decision against Penn’s Canaan Bethea after scoring a flurry of back points in the waning seconds of the third period. Heavyweight Quean Smith added on to the total with a major decision of his own and put the Cyclones ahead 8-0 after the first two matches. 

At the lower weight classes, Kyle Larson scored another major decision for Iowa State, while Earl Hall took a narrow 5-2 victory after a takedown at the end of the third period gave him the three point cushion. 

It was freshman Dante Rodriguez who got the nod over John Meeks at 141 pounds. Rodriguez scored the first pin for Iowa State, giving the Cyclones a 24-0 lead at the midway point of the dual. The Cyclones added another pin just two weighs later at 157 pounds, as senior Luke Goettl scored another fall. 

All-American Michael Moreno, who sat out the Southern Scuffle, notched another fall before Tanner Weatherman lost a 3-2 decision at 174 pounds. Lelund Weatherspoon ended the day on a high note, scoring a technical fall to give Iowa State the 41-3 victory. 

Iowa State’s next action comes at 2 p.m. on Jan. 18 at Hilton Coliseum against Virginia Tech.
