Living underground: Missile storage used as homes

Peter O'Brien

In a report from the New York Times, a man named Jim Moore, a real estate agent in Roswell, New Mexico is currently selling a home that is completely underground.

The only visible part of the home is a green door that when opened, will lead 10 stories underground. The home is 20 miles away from the downtown area.

So what is the reason for this large underground space in the first place? This underground area has been around since the Cold War and was home to a missile silo.

The New York Times reported that the missile that used to be stored underground was over 100 times more powerful than the atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II.

When the missile was taken out from underground, what is left is just a very large underground space that is currently unoccupied.

It is reported by the New York Time that the listing price for the (house) is $295,000. Even though the living quarters are deep underground and are far out in the desert away from pretty much anything, there has been a decent amount of interest in buying this space.

Missile silos like this were set in place all over during the Cold War due to the feud with the Soviet Union. If things ended up going differently in the Cold War, there is no question that this bomb would have been used, causing detrimental devastation and death. On the opposite side, this underground bunker could have been used as a place for shelter if an attack was imminent. Being so far underground, the bunker could have had a very good chance of holding off a nuclear blast.

As long as the tenants are not uncomfortable being confined to small places, the location would have some benefits.

When a city is being hit by a tornado, the first place people go is the basement, if they have one. In this case, the entire home would be considered the basement and would be able to withstand natural disasters such as tornadoes and hurricanes.

The New York Times also reported that other underground bunkers haven’t just been used for homes, but for alternative uses as well. One underground bunker in Kansas was turned into a condo that included a spa, pool, and theater.

Even though it is something that is a little uncommon, new homes like these could prove to be very safe and comfortable. Who knows, maybe this could be the start to a new trend of homes.
