On Jan. 29, the United States Men’s National Team lost its 2015 soccer opener to Chile by a score of 3-2. The United States went entered the game ranked No. 27 in the world and Chile is No. 14.

While the U.S. team was off to a fast start with a goal from Brek Shea early in the game in the sixth minute, Chile quickly responded with a goal in the 10th minute. U.S. forward Jozy Altidore also scored a goal in the 31st minute, which featured a great buildup from other U.S. players, DeAndre Yedlin and Mix Diskerud. U.S. Soccer reported that this goal by Altidore was his 26th goal for the U.S. and puts him fifth in the all-time scoring list while wearing a U.S. jersey. Landon Donovan currently ranks No. 1 with the most goals for the U.S. with 57, and current U.S. captain Clint Dempsey is ranked No. 2 with 39 goals.

However, the second half was not so nice for the U.S. when Chile scored two goals in the 66th and 75th minutes to give the Americans the lead and eventually the victory. This loss gives the U.S. a 3-5-2 record against Chile.

Even though this was a tough loss for the U.S., head coach Jurgen Klinsmann went with a lot of young new talent and featured players who made their first appearances in a U.S. uniform. Current Major League Soccer standouts Wil Trapp and Gyasi Zardes made their debuts and it will not be shocking to see them make many more appearances in the future.

The U.S. will now look to the next match, which will be held on U.S. soil in California and will be played against Panama, who is currently ranked No. 55 in the world. Another major game that will be held in the U.S. is when the team will play rival Mexico on April 15. The US-Mexico rivalry has lasted for over 70 years and includes meetings in the form of friendly matches, CONCACAF-Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football-competitions and the Gold Cup.

With an impressive result in the World Cup, which was held in Brazil last summer and with a group of very talented young players, America has a lot to look forward to and the team has lots of potential. With great leadership in players such as Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey, Jermaine Jones and strong coaching from Klinsmann, the U.S. is on a good track and hopes to get good results in the team’s next few matches. This is all-in preparation for their upcoming qualifying matches for the next World Cup, which will be held in Russia in 2018.
