Martin Luther King Jr.’s connection to Iowa State

Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke at Iowa State on Jan. 22, 1960, just three years before his famous, “I have a dream,” speech and eight years before his assassination.

An old Iowa State Daily article showed a preview saying, “Civil Rights Leader Will Speak Tonight.”

Also according to the article, King delivered a speech that night in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union about the “Moral Challenge of the New Age.”

The Iowa State Daily could not quote any of the seven-page speech because of the King estate’s copyrights.

Old Iowa State Daily articles said following King’s assassination, ISU students held gatherings and demonstrations in remembrance of King.

“Reaction to the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was seen on the Iowa State Campus yesterday in the form of an active demonstration in the Commons, Memorial Union, and a silent vigil on the steps of Beardshear Hall,” according to an April 6, 1968, Iowa State Daily article.
