Senior Bryce Dejean-Jones took to the podium on Dec. 14 after Iowa State’s 88-78 victory versus Southern to address the circumstances surrounding his one-game suspension and to apologize for the actions which sidelined him for the ISU win versus Iowa.

ISU men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg sat next to Dejean-Jones as he spoke and then took questions.

“I want to apologize to my teammates, coaching staff, the university, my neighbors and also police for violating the noise ordinance multiple times,” Dejean-Jones said. “I got multiple warnings and I just was not getting it. I learned my lesson and I understand it now.”

The transfer guard from UNLV explained why the behavior continued even after he was approached by numerous neighbors and after the police had been called on several occasions.

“Where I am from, loud music, we play it,” Dejean-Jones said. “I just have to learn coming to a new area, adjusting.”

Dejean-Jones assured reporters that nothing like this will happen again and that he plans to stay out of trouble for the remainder of the season.

He said that one of the most difficult parts of the suspension was having to watch his team throttle in-state rival Iowa from an Iowa City hotel room.

“First, I was just hurt that I put my team in a situation where I could not be out there with them,” Dejean-Jones said. “But I was in the hotel cheering my teammates on the whole way and I am glad we came out with a victory.”

Dejean-Jones reiterated that he had not smoked marijuana on Dec. 11, the evening in question.

“I was not smoking marijuana,” Dejean-Jones asserted. “I was not charged with possession of marijuana and I had no involvement with marijuana that night.”

Hoiberg said that he believes that Dejean-Jones will move forward with the team without incident.

“I absolutely anticipate Bryce learning his lesson,” Hoiberg said.
