Group gift ideas for parents
December 19, 2014
Nowadays gifts are getting more and more expensive, and, if you’re like me, you want to give the best you can to the two of the biggest people in your life: mom and dad. My siblings and I are roughly the same age (though there are six of us, so that’s a bit of an advantage), so that makes it easier for us to coordinate getting a nicer gift for our parents.
All we do is take the expensive gift and divide it between one another in equal chunks to pay for it. This is an effective way for us to get our parents one or two nice things rather than a bunch of little stuff that they probably don’t need. I’m not saying this system would work for all families, but it’s an idea.
Anyway, here are some ideas of some pricier objects you can buy for mom and/or dad for Christmas if you split the difference with one or more of your siblings.
A Keurig coffee brewer is always a good option (if one of your parents likes coffee). My sister and I actually went in together and got our mom a white Keurig off Target.com. It came with a 20 dollar gift card that we’re going to use to buy K-cups and a mug for her. Pay attention to these types of deals because you might be able to save some money while buying a kickass gift.
An iPad or a tablet is also a good idea. Most middle-aged parents have a laptop or desktop computer, but it might be a good idea to introduce them to a more portable option. You can also expand on this gift at later times by getting them accessories and whatnot.
My siblings and I went all-in on a Bose sound system last year. I don’t remember the exact model, but it’s still a great piece of equipment. The sound is awesome and reaches throughout the house.
Sometimes parents don’t make enough time to actually get out and do things, especially if all the kids are out of the house. Try buying them some tickets to see a show or event in a different city and buying a hotel suite for them to stay in. Think of it as gifting a mini vacation.
This is a cheaper option, but one that’s definitely appreciated. A car detailing appointment can save your parents a lot of time, hassle and back pain as someone else does the work professionally. I know my mom always voices how she would appreciate a gift like this, so keep it in mind.
This final idea is more for grandparents. You know how grandma and grandpa appreciate the little, thought-through, generally homemade gifts? Well this is a homemade gift that can definitely be used by the elderly. Pre-prepare a bunch of meals and/or meat that your grandparents can take out of the freezer and make on a whim. Make sure they’re proportioned correctly to take care of both your grandpa and grandma for lunch or supper. Some ideas include bubble pizza, meatballs, pulled pork or chicken, enchiladas, burritos, spaghetti sauce and meat, etc. This can be very time-consuming and potentially expensive, so it may be a good idea to pair up with a brother, sister, cousin, aunt, whatever to make this happen.
