Iowa State rolls into new year with Hoiberg’s 100th win
December 31, 2014
Iowa State rung in the new year in record-breaking style, as ISU coach Fred Hoiberg became the fastest coach to reach 100 wins in the program’s history.
The ISU men’s basketball team (10-1, 0-0 Big 12) trounced Mississippi Valley State (1-12, 0-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) by a score of 83-33.
The Cyclones could do very little wrong against the hapless and over matched Delta Devils as the onslaught began almost immediately after the opening tip.
The star of the night was junior Naz Long, who came up two points shy of tying his career high of 26, scoring 21 of his 24 points on seven made 3-pointers.
Long’s career high from behind the arc is eight, a record he also threatened but did not reach, as Hoiberg pulled Long from the game with over seven minutes left to play after the win was well in hand.
The atmosphere inside Hilton was flatter than normal as no student tickets were sold because of the winter hiatus from school, but emphatic dunks by senior Bryce Dejean-Jones and redshirt junior Jameel McKay helped to rouse fans out of both their seats and their relative silence.
McKay finished his Hilton debut with 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks.
The one negative issue for Iowa State was a sloppiness with the basketball, as the Cyclones turned the ball over 15 times.
Iowa State’s next game will take place in Brooklyn, New York versus South Carolina on Jan. 3. Tip off is set for 5:00 p.m. central standard time.
