World AIDS Day Concert

New York City hosted the World AIDS Day Concert on Monday in Times Square. Performers at the concert included U2, Carrie Underwood, and Kanye West.

However, U2 was without front man Bono due to an injury suffered from a biking injury, USA Today reports. To fill in for him, Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin took over the vocals and performed in front of hundreds of fans.

USA Today reported that in addition to supporting the fight against AIDS, the concert also had a theme of wishing Bono a quick recovery from his injuries.

Bono has been a large part of fighting AIDS worldwide for the last couple of decades. Bono also invited former President Bill Clinton to speak at the opening of the concert and President Barack Obama spoke in a video that was played on a screen in Times Square.

Bono launched (RED) Organization to help fight AIDS and USA Today reported that Bank of America would donate $3 million dollars to the organization.

For the first time ever the number of people who were put on treatment for AIDS was more than the number of people who were affected by the virus.
